  • His mother, Teji Bachchan, was a Sikhin and came from Lyallpur now Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan.
  • His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a famous Indian poet.



  • Initially it was called 'Inquilab', but after the suggestion of Sumitranandan Pant another Harivansh poet Rai Bachchan he was replaced by 'Amitabh', which means 'The light that never dies'.
  • Although his true last name is "Srivastava," his father replaced him by "Bachchan" because his father, Harivansh Rai, left his name "Shrivastav" to protest against the Indian system.
  • His mother is interested in theaters and even gets a character that later refuses and chooses her homes.
  • During his studies he played in plays.
  • When he was young, he wanted to become an engineer and he wanted to work with the Indian Air Force.
  • In the university he was a good athlete and he won the races of 100, 200 and 400 meters. In Sherwood's Nainital he also won a boxing championship.

  • Amitabh, known for her baritone, was already rejected by All India Radio.
  • Prior to making his debut performance in "Saat Hindustani", he made his film debut as a winner in the premier film "Bhuvan Shome" by Mrinal Sen 1969.
  • In 1971 he received his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporter for his role as a doctor in the film Anand.
  • He shared the screen with his future wife Jaya Bhaduri for the first time in the film - Guddi 1971; in which he appeared.

  • On July 26, 1982, he was seriously injured during the filming of Coolie at the University of Bangalore. He was also clinically pronounced dead for 11 minutes by the doctors before they gave him adrenaline injections, saving his life.
  • After Coolie's incident, he was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis in the long term a neuromuscular disease that causes various levels of muscular weakness.
