As an adolescent, he was very inspired by Mehdi Hassan and soon developed a passion for the Ghazals. In 1977 he won the "All India On Singer Competition" show and he became a famous face.
After listening to his voice, the late musical director Jaidev made a lot of impression and asked him to sing a song "Ajeeb Saaneha Mujh De Guzar Gaya Yaaron" for his "Gaman" film from 1978.
In 1992 he entered the Tamil film industry where he sang a patriotic song 'Thamizha Thamizha' with musical director A. R. Rahman.

He is also an outstanding singer of Ghazal and has more than thirty albums by Ghazal to his name. Gulfam, Aabshar-e-Ghazal, Jashn and many others are among their famous Ghazal albums. He worked with the great array Maestro Zakir Hussain for his album "Hazir".
