In 1972 he married her child-friend Shehla. Marriage, which hardly happened, because the father of Shehla, Akhtar-ul-Iman, a famous writer, wanted to study it further. In 1975 he received Gabbar Singh's role in the Sholay movie. Initially he was rejected by Javed Akhtar for his dark voice.

However, Salim, who was one of his writers, stood on his role and eventually won Gabbar Singh's role. When Amjad Khan proposed Gabbar Singh's role, he was only 35 years old. He drew Sholay on the day of the birth of his first son, Shadaab, on September 20, 1973.
