His mother, Yelan, is the granddaughter of Chinese Gandhiana, Tseng, who traveled to India with her mother in 1971 to see the Sevram-ashram and also translated Gandhi's autobiography into Chinese. Jwala Gutta wanted to continue his career in tennis, but her mother asked her to play badminton.
She was only 4 years old when her father introduced him to the national badminton coach S.Mr Arif. She learned gymnastics and swimming before she started her badminton training. She started playing badminton at the age of 6 and won the National Under-13 Badminton Championship in Kerala.

Jwala Gutta worked with Shruti Kurien for several years and the duo won the national title of double ladies of 7 years from 2002 to 2008. After his divorce the media speculated his links with the former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin.
It remains active in social fronts and has been involved in various social issues, including anti-smoking campaigns, anti-defense campaigns and empowering women.
In many cases she is ranked as one of India's most inspirational sportsmen. In 2011, the Indian government gave him the Arjuna Prize, the second highest sports premium in India. In 2013 she appeared in an article number in a film film, Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde.
