In 1931, his brother Devi was dead pneumonia and another brother, Nandi, also died that year as a result of swallowing rat poison pills scattered in the garden. In 1948 he worked as a junior artist, the monthly salary of 50, in his father's Prithviraj Kapoor company for over four years.

In 1968, during the film Brahmachari, he felt intimacy with Indian actress Mumtaz and offered to marry, but she was politely refused when he asked her to resign her film career. He was the nephew of singer Jugal Kishore Mehra, while Salma Agha actress and singer was his niece.

Films like Junglee, Kashmir Ki Kali Rajkumar, Janwar, Teesri Manzil, Professor, Vidhaata, Dil Tera Diwana, Evening in Paris, Dil Deke Dekho and Tumsa Nahi Dekha, Pyaar Kiya for Darna Kya, Preet Na Jane Reet, a school girl, prince Budtameez , Sachaai, Latt Saheb and Tumse Achha Kaun Hai turned out to be very popular at the ticket office.

1950s until the early 1970s, he was the only dance hero glamor of Indian film industry and was known as the Elvis Presley of India as he himself composed the dance numbers that put the Outstanding.

In the Seventies he could not continue his career as a romantic hero due to his overweight, and Andaz 1971 was his last film of this type. The director 'Rockstar' of Imtiaz Ali is his latest movie in which he plays.

On August 14, 2011, he died of a chronic renal failure at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. He has worked as a protagonist in more than 50 films and has featured in more than 20 films.
